D-MAX Offers Space Cab for Less Cost

Isuzu UTE Australia is adding a Space Cab variant to its increasingly popular Isuzu D-MAX diesel one-tonne ute and cab/chassis range for much less extra cost than its competitors.

The new Space Cab D-MAX SX 4x4 cab/chassis costs just $2,200 more than its single cab/chassis stablemate compared to the $4,000 to $5,500 extra that other brands charge for this variant.

With a Manufacturer’s Retail Price (MRP) of $35,800 (including GST, excluding on-road costs and rear body) or $37,476 MRP with its endorsed 2100mm (load floor length) alloy GPA tray body fitted dockside, the D-MAX Space Cab SX 4x4 cab/chassis offers generous in-cabin room behind its two bucket seats, ideal for locking valuable gear inside or a spot of power-napping via fully reclined bucket seat backrests.

Arguably the most stylish of the D-MAX cab variants, the Space Cab stands out with its signature low-sill and round-cornered rear quarter windows—which are openable at their trailing edges for added cabin ventilation with minimal wind noise.

The Space Cab is the second new variant added to the burgeoning Isuzu D-MAX line-up in the last few weeks and follows the recent release of the D-MAX SX 4x4 Crew Ute.

It similarly offers a generous standard feature list including air-conditioning, ABS with EBD and LSD (all extra-cost options on the equivalent HiLux), dual airbags, power door locks, remote entry, CD/FM/AM MP3 audio and electric windows with one-touch driver’s glass up and down.

D-MAX Space Cab has the longest endorsed tray load floor length from cab to axle among the Japanese space cab one-tonners for optimal loaded stability and safety. This derives from its Isuzu chassis which has a uniquely longer wheelbase (by a sizeable 150mm) in cab/chassis models than in its utes and at 3200mm is equal longest in the class. Total endorsed tray load floor length of 2100mm is 150mm more than BT50 and Ranger equivalents. D-MAX 4x4’s tray rear loading height is also lower than others thanks to its underslung rear leaf springs which are unusual in 4x4 but don’t cost ground clearance.

The new Space Cab SX cab/chassis comes with D-MAX’s 4x4 package of three-tonne maximum tow capacity, high 225mm ground clearance, ultra-low low-range first gear with anti-stall—ideal for negotiating steep or rocky ground or paddock-crawling, steel plate sump and transfer case guards, fuel tank shield, wider track 16”x7” wheels with meaty 245/70 tyres, wheel arch flares, push-button dash controls for 2WD/4WD/low range selection and shift-on-the-fly up to 100 km/h between 2WD and 4WD High.

The Space Cab shares Isuzu’s economical and torquey 3.0 litre common-rail, variable-vane turbo-diesel engine as in the rest of the D-MAX range, with top torque of 360 Nm at 1800-2800 rpm, 120 kW peak power at 3200rpm and ADR 81/02 fuel economy rated in this variant at a super -frugal 8.1litres/100km ADR81/02 combined urban/highway rating — less than any other 4x4 ute or cab/chassis of 2.5 litres upwards, even single cab, including the upcoming HP 2.5 Triton.

This D-MAX engine also powers Isuzu’s NLR/NNR 200 series two-tonne truck ranges. This shows how under-stressed the D-MAX engine is compared with some competitors in the class with higher-stressed, higher output diesels with more gear ratios which can’t match D-MAX’s fuel economy and tow capacity equation. Petrol engines — even four cylinders — with their much higher fuel consumption are not in the same league as D-MAX.

Progress

Isuzu UTE Australia (IUA) has continued to appoint new dealers to service customers in remaining open points and is nearing completion of its Australian dealer network establishment phase with 62 dealers now operating. A further eight authorized satellite outlets (ASOs) are also operational and another 12 ASO sites are planned in the near future. IUA commenced wholesale operations last October with 38 dealers nationwide.

D-MAX sales year-to-date exceed 2,100 and continue to trend upwards. Private buyers are prominent, drawn by the Isuzu brand’s reputation for reliability, truck-tough engineering and IUA’s good value retail pricing.
