Three New Models In Holden Renaissance

The next three new models in Holden’s product renaissance will be unveiled today at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne.

From the smallest to the largest vehicles in its portfolio, Holden is completely revitalising its line-up showing the all-new Barina, the high-anticipated Cruze hatch and the imposing Colorado 4x4 for the first time in Australia.

Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mike Devereux announced the product renewal last year with Barina Spark the first of 10 new models on the way across every major segment.

“This year we’ve already launched the new Australian-made Series II Cruze sedan which has helped rejuvenate the local auto industry and Series II Captiva 5 and Captiva 7 which are important models in the popular SUV segment,” he said.

Mr Devereux said Holden was looking forward to its next launch with the new generation Barina hitting the popular light-car segment in the coming months.

“Barina is one of Holden’s most important nameplates and it will be a serious competitor in the light car segment. The new global design was led by a Holden designer on international assignment and highlights the depth of automotive design talent in Australia.

“This is a real source of pride for Holden – we’re one of only seven operations in the GM world with the design, engineering and manufacturing capability that we have. The Holden team is working on a huge range of projects here and around the world on every kind of design and engineering assignment imaginable.”

The new Cruze hatch was also designed by Holden, with the showcar hand built by the design team in Port Melbourne and production version set to roll off the assembly line in South Australia later this year.

“We can’t wait for Cruze hatch to go on sale. Cruze made it to number one in the small car segment last month with only one body-style, so we can’t wait to see how customers in a hatch market like Australia respond to the car,” he said.

Mr Devereux said the new Colorado models would also see Holden challenging traditional light commercial vehicle leaders next year.

“The Colorado show car is the biggest and brightest star on the Holden stage this year. Again, it showcases the Holden design talent and is more than a hint of what LCV customers can expect when it goes on sale next year.

“The next generation Colorado will be an important player in light commercial/pickup 4x4 segment which is up 11 per cent this year.”

Mr Devereux said together Barina, Cruze hatch and Colorado would help drive sales growth in three important categories.

“Commodore continues to dominate Australian large car sales but we have to keep innovating to keep Australia’s favourite car on top and relevant to consumers.

“We’ll be adding to the Ecoline model range, extending E85 flex-fuel capability to the popular 3.6 litre SIDI V6 engine and launching a new dedicated LPG Commodore range to take advantage of the CO2 benefits of the locally-abundant fuel.

“But Holden is a lot more than one carline – we have to be a serious threat to the competition in light cars, small cars, SUVs and LCVs – and we think with these new generation products we will be.

“All of the vehicles unveiled at the Show highlight that we don’t just sell cars in Australia, we invest hundreds of millions of dollars a year in our operations and people to make Holden one of the most important design and engineering centres in the GM world.

“Further into 2012 Australia will see more game changing and segment leading models like the extended range electric Holden Volt, an all-new mid-size Holden Malibu and other exciting vehicles we’re not quite ready to talk about yet,” Mr Devereux.
