All-new Ford Kuga with standard EcoBoost and SYNC Featured

Ford Australia has today confirmed that the all-new Ford Kuga will be available with an EcoBoost petrol engine and TDCi turbo diesel engine when it arrives next year.

Apart from fuel efficient engines, the newest compact SUV to join the Ford family will combine striking design and functionality with a rewarding driving experience. Smart technologies like Ford’s voice activated in-car SYNC connectivity system and Active Park Assist will also be available.

In the Ford Kuga, both the EcoBoost and TDCi engines will be available with six-speed automatic transmissions. Drivers will also be able to experience a more “hands-on” experience by being able to manually control gear selection from a switch on the shifter.

Ford Australia continues to expand its EcoBoost engine option, which is already available in the Focus ST, Mondeo Zetec and Titanium and the Falcon XT, G6 and G6E.

Using the latest powertrain technologies such as EcoBoost and twin independent camshaft variable timing (Ti-VCT), Ford has given its newest SUV a range of engines that are capable of high power and high torque while consuming less fuel.

The global EcoBoost technology also features turbocharging and direct injection so that the EcoBoost engines can rival the power and performance of a larger engine – but at a fraction of the fuel consumption.

These engines are fundamental to the Ford strategy of providing technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains that deliver exceptional fuel economy and exceptional performance for millions of drivers around the world. Ford holds more than 125 patents on this engine technology.

Aiding fuel economy is the Ford Kuga’s sleeker design. The new model is almost 10 per cent more aerodynamic than the outgoing model.

Ford designers have made the Ford Kuga even more customer friendly, incorporating more space and a faster silhouette, a more precise execution and a higher quality feel.

From the initial design, new Ford Kuga was engineered to be as visually appealing up close as it is from a distance with spaces between panels no wider than 0.5mm. The craftsmanship inside emphasises feel and touch through use of a soft instrument panel and soft door upper roll. Particular attention was paid to deleting exposed fasteners on moving parts like the tailgate, sun visors and glovebox.

Other than the more aerodynamic design, the Ford Kuga’s Active Grille Shutter system further enhances fuel economy by reducing wind resistance. Active Grille Shutters are also employed on the Focus MkII range.

Grille slats stay open when extra engine cooling air is required, such as low-speed stop-and-go driving. When cruising on the highway at steady speeds, the grille slats automatically close to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.

When the Ford Kuga arrives next year it will also come in at a competitive pricepoint in the hotly contested compact SUV segment.

“The Ford Kuga will present a strong value-for-money equation for customers,” said Ford Australia president and CEO, Bob Graziano. “We want to make the new Ford Kuga accessible to all customers.”

Among the customer-focused features being shown for the first time in Australia on the Ford Kuga is “open sesame” - a hands-free automatic tailgate, allowing customers to open or close the rear tailgate by simply sweeping a foot under the rear bumper.

Using the same motion technology found in today’s video game systems, a gentle kicking motion under the centre of the rear bumper activates, unlocks and raises the tailgate when the driver has the Ford Kuga key fob. This allows quick and easy access to the cargo area without needing to set down packages or dig out keys. The same process closes the hatch.

To help demonstrate this exciting feature, Ford Australia has secured two Ford Kugas as part of its “Smart Drive” outdoor experience.

Ford Kuga will also introduce a “smart” AWD system that pre-emptively reassesses road conditions 20 times faster than it takes to blink an eye, readjusting the AWD power split to give the driver the best blend of handling and traction.

The Ford Kuga aligns with the One Ford strategy as a global vehicle, on sale worldwide, including North America, where it is badged the Escape and Europe, where it is called Ford Kuga. The Ford Kuga is one of 10 cars to be built on the same C-segment platform as the LW Focus.

Full Australian specifications and features will be released closer to the vehicle’s launch in 2013.
