Jeep Grand Cherokee has outclassed talented rivals including those costing more than twice its price to become 4x4 Australia Magazine’s 2014 4x4 Of The Year.

Grand Cherokee Overland CRD diesel beat Range Rover Sport SDV6, Range Rover SDV8, Holden Colorado 7, Holden Colorado ute and Isuzu MU-X to earn the title from the highly respected magazine, which is read by hundreds of thousands of 4x4 enthusiasts every month.

It also comes shortly after Grand Cherokee won Best 4WD in the Drive Car of the Year awards.

4x4 Australia Magazine Editor Matt Raudonikis praised Grand Cherokee’s numerous features and superior specification-for-price offering in honouring the vehicle with the coveted accolade.

“This is a great all road touring vehicle,” Mr Raudonikis said. “Sure it doesn’t have the unstoppable off road ability of a Jeep Wrangler but it does everything else so well.

“The Grand Cherokee Overland has a level of performance, safety, comfort and convenience features that belie its $71k price tag.”

All contenders for the award were put through a demanding week-long drive program that comprised on and off road terrain, highways, country roads, gravel roads, steep rocky tracks and beach driving.

The 4x4 Of The Year judging panel, which includes past and present editors of the magazine and other industry experts, awarded the Jeep SUV in a unanimous decision.

4x4 Australia Magazine Road Test Editor Fraser Stronach said such an outcome further highlighted Grand Cherokee’s all-round abilities.

“Unanimous results are rare in the history of this award and this speaks volumes for the attributes, performance, appeal and, above all, the value of the Grand Cherokee CRD,” Mr Stronach said.

“This is a brilliant back roads tourer that, by 4x4 standards, feels like a sports car.

“At this Overland specification, the equipment level is so long that it’s impossible to detail in the space available here but suffice it to say, could easily justify a $100,000, or more, price tag.”

Fiat Chrysler Australia CEO and President Veronica Johns said the award reinforced the positive impact Grand Cherokee had made on the Australian market.

“We are delighted Grand Cherokee continues to impress everyone who experiences it, from our many satisfied customers to the toughest of critics,” Ms Johns said.

The complete 4x4 Of The Year report will appear in the February 2014 edition of 4x4 Australia Magazine, which is on sale now.

The Motor Report is pleased to announce that the winner of its BEST BUY AWARD 2013 is the Mazda CX-5 2.5 litre SkyActiv petrol wagon.

“Australian car buyers have never had so much choice, nor seen such value, as they find in dealer showrooms today. In the strongest field of new car releases we’ve ever seen, Mazda’s CX-5 2.5 litre SkyActiv stands tallest,” TMR Managing Editor Tim O’Brien said.

“This is the car, above all new releases of 2013, we commend most strongly to car buyers in 2014.

“Few cars find the pulse of the Australian buyer quite like the Mazda CX-5. Quite simply, Mazda’s versatile CX-5 2.5 litre SkyActiv wagon hits the bullseye,” Mr O’Brien said.

“For what it offers ‘middle Australia’, this intelligently executed AWD wagon from Mazda, priced From $32,880 (plus on roads), is the BEST BUY of the moment.”

With standard six-speed auto and standard AWD, the CX-5 2.5 litre SkyActiv wagon offers space for a family, supple on-road comfort, a smart appealing interior and equally appealing on-road dynamics.

“And it looks as ‘right’ with a surfboard up top, as it does with a family within,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Mazda’s CX-5 2.5 litre SkyActiv AWD wagon has answers everywhere you look - both for family buyers and young singles.

“We are proud to award Mazda’s CX-5 2.5 litre SkyActive AWD wagon TMR’s 2013 BEST BUY AWARD of 2013.

“We congratulate Mazda and Mazda Australia for giving Australian car buyers this profoundly worthy winner in a very strong field,” Mr O’Brien said.

Euro NCAP Names Jeep Cherokee Best in Class

Leading automotive safety organisation Euro NCAP has named Jeep Cherokee one of only six vehicles with best in class safety.

The all-new model outshone its rivals to earn top billing in the Small SUV class, which comes just months after Euro NCAP awarded it with the highest possible five-star safety rating.

Euro NCAP, which is partnered with Australia’s ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program), puts new vehicles through extensive and thorough crash tests to determine their safety performance.

Jeep Cherokee will launch in Australia in the second quarter of the year.

  • Believed three-owner, low-mileage vehicle
  • Original 6 cylinder engine and three-speed transmission
  • Careful and correct older restoration

A carefully restored and believed mechanically correct 1963 Toyota FJ40 LandCruiser is expected to be pursued by 4WD enthusiasts and collectors at Shannons Late Summer Melbourne Auction on February 17.

The beautiful two-tone green Toyota with its ‘corrugated’ hardtop and trademark white roof is believed to be one of earliest FJ40s sold by then-Australian Toyota distributor Thiess Brothers.

Toyota began building four wheel drive ‘BJ series’ vehicles for the US Army’s military police stationed in Japan in the early 1950s and re-named them LandCruisers’ when they were made available to the public in 1954.

Thiess began importing canvas-roofed FJ20 series LandCruisers from Japan in 1958 after winning the contracts to construct the Tooma Dam and Tooma-Tumut Tunnel for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme and subsequently sold the upgraded FJ40 LandCruiser in Australia from 1962.

With a lineage extending through to the 1980s, the FJ40 wrote the LandCruiser legend, with 121,000 finding their way into the hands of Australian farmers, miners and adventurers out of more than one million sold around the world.

The classic FJ40 being auctioned has been in the hands of its current, believed third owner, for around 25 years and its body and paintwork were restored by him over a period of two years in the early 1990s.

At the same time the vehicle’s mechanical components, including its 3.9 litre six cylinder engine, three-speed column-change gearbox, low-range transfer case, front and rear differentials and radiator, were inspected, cleaned, but not rebuilt and are believed to all be original.

The vehicle presents very well and is fitted with five near-new bar-tread period tyres on its rare 15-inch steel rims, two replacement rear axles and a new, complete period toolbox.

The FJ40’s seats have been re-upholstered in their original pattern and it is being sold with a near-new workshop manual, a new parts catalogue and its original ignition key, making it very attractive for collectors.

Because of its excellent provenance, authentic condition and increasing value as a collectible vehicle, Shannons believe the FJ40 will attract bids in the $20,000-$25,000 range at the February 17 Melbourne auction.

Holden Offers Best Ever Captiva Range Value

Holden has launched the new Model Year 14 Captiva range with the introduction of a number of updates and a reduction in the recommended retail price across all models, strengthening Captiva’s position as one of the most versatile and best-value SUV offerings in the market.

With a $2,500 reduction in the recommended retail price across Australia’s best-selling 7-seater SUV range, model year 14 Captiva 7 now starts from just $29,990.

Captiva 5 also benefits from a price reduction of up to $2,000, with the range now starting from just $25,990.

Captiva 7 trim levels have also been renamed, with SX, CX and LX becoming LS, LT and LTZ respectively.

In addition to the sharp revised pricing, the best-selling Captiva 7 receives a host of styling changes including a redesigned front fascia and grille.  Rear styling has also been updated with a new rear fascia that features redesigned chrome exhaust tips and a new LED tail lamp design.

Both Captiva 7 LT and LTZ receive new integrated side steps while the LT receives new 18-inch alloy wheels.

Driver convenience is enhanced on all Captiva 7 models with the introduction of sensor key technology with passive entry and start as a standard feature.

Captiva 5 welcomes the addition of chrome exterior door handles on the LTZ and a new 18-inch wheel design for the LT model.

Holden Executive Director, Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, Philip Brook said Captiva had been one of Australia’s best-selling SUV nameplates over the past seven years.

“Since its first full year of sales in 2007, Holden has sold over 100,000 Captivas and in 2013 Captiva 7 was the best-selling seven-seater in Australia,” Mr Brook said.

“Customers tell us it’s a combination of great features and styling at a competitive price point that makes Captiva such a compelling choice.

“And we are committed to driving new car buyers into the popular range by offering great value through strong retail pricing and HoldenWise capped price service guarantees.

“As with all of Holden’s recent new car launches, we’ve really sharpened our pencil on the new Captiva pricing, so we can continue to offer great value to SUV buyers.  With price reductions across the range, we believe Captiva will remain high on the shopping lists of Australian families.”

Holden Captiva is already recognised for its value, receiving a 2013 Wheels Gold Star value award in the 7 seater SUV under $60,000 category.

Model Year 14 Captiva range is available in Holden dealers now.

  • Wrangler Freedom features military vehicle styling
  • Includes interior and exterior enhancements
  • Available in two and four-door variants
  • Priced from $35,000*

Jeep has released a special edition Wrangler that evokes the brand’s army vehicle manufacturing legacy.

Wrangler Freedom is an enhancement of the Sport 3.6-litre V6 model, incorporating special styling cues and upgrades to both the interior and exterior.

It is available in two-door and four-door Unlimited variants, both of which offer Jeep’s legendary off-road ability.

A large ‘Freedom Star’ decal − purposefully weathered to make it appear like those on the original Jeep army vehicles − appears on both Wrangler Freedom’s bonnet and rear flank.

The five-pointed star is symbolic of vehicles assigned to tactical units in the US armed forces.

It has a specific colour to match the chosen hue from Freedom exterior paint range, which includes: Flame Red, Bright White, Hydro Blue Pearl, Black, Bright Silver Metallic and Dune.

The star also features as an embroidered logo on both front seats, greeting occupants as they enter the vehicle.

2014 Wrangler Freedom’s other exterior enhancements over and above the Sport model include:

  • ‘Oscar Mike’ badging (Oscar Mike means “On Mission” or “On the Move”. “O” stands for Oscar and “M” for Mike in military code)
  • Mineral Grey painted grille
  • Wrangler Rubicon Rock Rails
  • Mopar black fuel flap
  • Body coloured wheel arch flares

Interior upgrades include the following:

  • Front and rear seat upholstery in combination black McKinley leather, vinyl and fabric with Freedom Star embroidered on driver and passenger seats
  • Centre console finished in black upholstery with silver accent stitching
  • Silver accented seat, steering wheel and floor console stitching
  • Quick silver finish air vent rings
  • Front door armrest finished in McKinley vinyl upholstery with silver accent stitching
  • Mopar black slush floor mats
  • Steering wheel finished in black leather with silver accent stitching
  • Quick silver painted door grab handles (front and rear)

Wrangler Freedom is powered by the iconic all-alloy Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 engine, which produces 209kW of power and 347Nm of torque while consuming just 11.4-litres per 100km in the combined cycle for the two-door variant.

US-based automotive online resource Wards Auto named the Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 one of its top 10 best engines for three successive years.

Wrangler Freedom is available with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission in both two and four door models, catering to all driving styles and preferences.

Jeep’s Command-Trac® system enhances Wrangler Freedom’s superior off-road performance, delivering equal power to all wheels for maximum traction.

It also has 223mm of ground clearance, 35-degree approach angle and 22-degree breakover angle for negotiating the toughest terrain.
Fiat Chrysler Group CEO and President Veronica Johns said Wrangler Freedom brought unique styling to the already rugged, purposeful Wrangler range.

“Australian buyers proved last year that they love Jeep Wrangler and we are pleased to offer them a new special edition model that provides a strong visual connection with Jeep’s rich heritage,” Ms Johns said.

Jeep Wrangler Freedom will be available in Australian showrooms from early February.

  • New Nissan Murano features new safety technologies (Ti only)
  • Live Traffic Monitoring added to Navigation System (Ti only)
  • 2014 Nissan Murano is now on sale $66,464 driveaway^ for the Ti model

MELBOURNE, Australia (18 February 2014) – The 2014 Nissan Murano is now on sale, boasting new features and attractive drive away prices.

The 2014 Nissan Murano features a number of changes in the range topping Ti grade. The Murano Ti now includes a suite of safety technologies including Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection.

Blind Spot Warning is designed to alert drivers to the presence of other vehicles traveling in their blind spots. It delivers a sound alert and ‘warning indicator’ fitted to the Murano Ti’s passenger-side mirror. Lane Departure Warning makes certain a moment’s distraction doesn’t become a catastrophic error by ensuring that the driver does not unintentionally drift out of their lane. Should they veer off their intended course, the driver will be instantly alerted by both a display indicator and an audible warning. Moving Object Detection automatically engages whenever the Murano Ti is in reverse, activating the rear view monitor to show what’s behind the vehicle on the display screen and giving both a visual and audio alert to any objects that move into the Murano Ti’s path.

The 2014 Nissan Murano Ti features Integrated Traffic Monitoring as part of the standard-fitment in-car navigation system. Integrated Traffic Monitoring supplies live traffic updates directly to the navigation system, so if there is a delay or obstruction on the planned route, where possible the navigation system will automatically re-plot an alternative route to help avid the problem.

Adding to the luxury and premium styling of the Murano Ti are 20” alloy wheels.

Best-in-class off-road capability thanks to two all-new 4x4 systems

Leveraging 4x4 technology from the all-new Jeep Cherokee, the all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade offers two of the most advanced and intelligent 4x4 systems in its class, all to deliver best-in-class off-road capability. Both systems can provide up to 100 percent of the engine’s available torque to the ground, through any wheel, for optimal grip.

Jeep Active Drive – full-time 4x4 system

Jeep Active Drive Low – class-exclusive full-time 4x4 system with 20:1 crawl ratio

Innovation is also at the forefront of any new Jeep vehicle, and the Renegade is the first small SUV to feature a disconnecting rear axle and power take-off unit (PTU) – all to provide Jeep Renegade 4x4 models with enhanced fuel economy. The system instantly engages when 4x4 traction is needed.

A global Jeep design for a rapidly growing global brand

From the start, Jeep designers knew the Renegade would need to deliver best-in-class off-road capability with city-sized proportions that exuded the brand’s rugged style while at the same time enhancing versatility, maneuverability and style. Additionally designers were tasked to create an all-new SUV that would symbolize the brand’s renowned American design and ingenuity, as it would mark the Jeep brand’s first entry into the small SUV segment in more than 100 markets around the globe. Last, Renegade had to offer the open-air freedom that dates back to its 1941 roots with the Willys MB Jeep.

The result is the all-new 2015 Renegade, a vehicle that builds on the Jeep Wrangler’s powerful stance, and features fresh new styling with rugged body forms and aggressive proportions that enable best-in-class approach and departure angles purposely designed to deliver best-in-class off-road capability. And for segment-exclusive panoramic views, two available My Sky open-air roof panel systems conveniently stow to provide passengers open-air freedom with ease.

All-new interior exudes a rugged and energetic appearance

The all-new Jeep Renegade interior features a rugged and energetic appearance that builds upon Jeep’s legendary brand heritage. Its precisely crafted detail, innovative and high-quality color and material appointments, state-of-the-art technology, and clever storage features draw inspiration from contemporary extreme sports gear and lifestyles.

The interior of the all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade has a distinctive form language which Jeep designers have titled “Tek-Tonic.” This new design theme is defined by the intersections of soft and tactile forms with rugged and functional details. Major surfaces such as the sculpted soft-touch instrument panel are intersected with bold functional elements like the passenger grab handle – indispensable for off-road adventures and borrowed from its big brother, the legendary Jeep Wrangler. Unique “protective clamp fasteners,” anodized design accents and inspired colors are derived from extreme sports equipment, while the newly familiar “X” shapes inspired by its roof and tail lamps add to Renegade’s Tek-Tonic interior look. And to make sure all of the needed passenger gear fits, the Renegade is designed with an efficient and flexible interior package that includes a removable, reversible and height-adjustable cargo floor panel and fold-forward front-passenger seat.

My Sky: continuing Jeep open-air freedom since 1941

Keeping the tradition of the legendary 1941 Willys MB Jeep, the all-new 2015 Renegade offers open-air freedom with two available My Sky open-air roof systems. With a manual removable, or removable with premium power tilt/slide feature, the segment-exclusive My Sky roof-panel systems quickly bring the outdoors inside. Designed for convenience, the honeycomb fiberglass polyurethane roof panels are lightweight and stow neatly in the rear cargo area. For added design detail, both My Sky roof systems feature a debossed “X” stamped into the roof that exude strength and play on the brand’s utilitarian history.

Best-in-class off-road capability with world-class on-road driving dynamics

Designed and engineered to first and foremost deliver legendary Jeep 4x4 capability, the all-new 2015 Renegade is the first small SUV from Chrysler Group to use the all-new “small-wide 4x4 architecture.”

With its fully independent suspension capable of up to 205 mm (8.1 inches) of wheel articulation and 220 mm (8.7 inches) of ground clearance (Trailhawk), Renegade raises the bar in the small SUV segment with best-in-class off-road capability. Extensive use of advanced steels, composites and advanced computer-impact simulations enable the all-new 2015 Renegade’s architecture to deliver world-class torsional stiffness and Jeep brand’s durability required for Trail Rated adventures.

The all-new Renegade is the first Jeep to integrate Koni’s frequency selective damping (FSD) front and rear strut system. This damping system enables the Jeep Renegade to deliver world-class road-holding and handling characteristics.

Designed for global markets: 16 powertrain combinations

True to the Jeep brand, the all-new Renegade will offer customers in global markets maximum off-road capability and fuel efficiency. The Renegade will offer up to 16 strategic powertrain combinations – the most ever in a Jeep vehicle – customized to markets around the world to meet a range of performance and efficiency needs. Powertrain options include:

Four MultiAir gasoline engine offerings

Two MultiJet II diesel engine offerings

Efficient and flex-fuel capable E.torQ engine

Emissions and fuel-saving Stop&Start technology

Segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission

Two manual and one dual-dry clutch transmission (DDCT) offerings

World’s first small SUV with nine-speed automatic transmission

Like the new Jeep Cherokee, the all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade has raised the bar — this time in the small SUV class — with the first available nine-speed automatic transmission. When paired with either the 2.0-liter MultiJet II diesel engine, or 2.4-liter MultiAir2 gas engine, the nine-speed transmission delivers numerous benefits customers will appreciate, including aggressive launches, smooth power delivery at highway speeds and improved fuel efficiency versus a six-speed automatic transmission.

Segment-exclusive technologies once found only on higher classed SUVs

The all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade offers technology features once found only in upper-segment vehicles, and makes them attainable to customers in the growing small SUV segment – including award-winning Uconnect Access, Uconnect touchscreens and the segment’s largest full-color instrument cluster.

Uconnect Access: Utilizes embedded cellular technology to allow Jeep Renegade occupants to get directly in contact with local emergency-service dispatchers – all with the push of the 9-1-1 Assist button on the rearview mirror. Uconnect Access applies the same logic to roadside assistance. One push of the “ASSIST” button summons help directly from Chrysler Group’s roadside assistance provider, or the Vehicle Customer Care Center. Further peace of mind comes from the system’s ability to receive text messages, announce receipt of texts, identify senders and then “read” the messages aloud with Bluetooth-equipped cell phones. AOL Autos named Uconnect Access its “Technology of the Year for 2013.” (Uconnect services may vary in different markets)

Uconnect touchscreen radio systems: Award-winning in-vehicle handsfree communication, entertainment and available navigation. Key features available on the Uconnect 5.0 and 6.5AN systems include a 5.0-inch or 6.5-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, single or dual-turner, radio data system capability (RDS), digital audio broadcast (DAB), HD Radio, digital media broadcasting (DMB), SiriusXM Radio, SiriusXM Travel Link, SiriusXM Travel Link, USB port and auxiliary audio jack input. (Uconnect services may vary in different markets)

Segment’s largest full-color instrument cluster display: Filling the Jeep Renegade’s gauge cluster in front of the driver is an available 7-inch, full-color, premium multiview display, featuring a reconfigurable function that enables drivers to personalize information inside the instrument cluster. The information display is designed to visually communicate information, using graphics and text, quickly and easily.

Renegade features up to 70 advanced safety and security features

Safety and security were at the forefront in the development of the all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade, setting the stage for up to 70 available safety and security features – including the availability of Forward Collision Warning-Plus and LaneSense Departure Warning-Plus.

In addition, engineers added both active and passive safety and security features, including Blind-spot Monitoring; Rear Cross Path detection; ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines; electronic stability control (ESC) with electronic roll mitigation and seven standard air bags.

Jeep brand’s global resources

Designed in America and crafted in Italy, the 2015 Renegade continues the Jeep brand’s dedication to the global marketplace and demonstrates the depths of its available resources. The final assembly location for the Renegade will be at the Melfi Assembly Plant. The Renegade’s global portfolio of powertrain production includes the United States, Italy and Brazil.

  • Two new option packs now available for the Land Rover Defender
  • Contrast leather premium seats, ebony headliner and privacy glass as standard
  • Dynamic Stability Control and ABS fitted as standard on all UK and European derivatives
  • 15 Model Year production starts from July 2014 and pricing will be be announced closer to this date.

Whitley UK, 19th February 2014 – This year’s Geneva Motor Show sees the launch of two new distinctive option packs – the ‘Black Pack’ and ‘Silver Pack’ – for Land Rover Defender. All Defender derivatives will also benefit from a suite of optional features including a new aluminium finish to the vehicle’s side runners, contrast finish leather seats, privacy glass and, for the first time, an ebony Alston headliner which brings a touch of luxury and prestige to this rugged legend.

Two new option packs

Black Pack – This pack features a Santorini black finish, which is applied to the roof, grille, grille surround, headlamp surrounds, wheel arches, ‘Defender’ bonnet script and interior facia. Privacy glass and an ebony Alston headliner lend the vehicle added visual drama. The black pack will be available with two wheel variations – a gloss black Sawtooth alloy wheel and a new gloss black heavy duty steel wheel.

Silver Pack – The silver pack adds a bright Indus silver finish to the contrast roof, which is complemented with the same finish to the grille surround, headlamp surrounds and facia. The vehicle also features the Dual Finish alloy wheels as standard and a bright light pack incorporating white tail and indicator lights.

Additional features

Defender derivatives are now available with the option of privacy glass. The option – standard on the black pack – adds darkened glass to second row windows on the Station Wagon, as well as to the alpine light and rear quarter light windows. Due to visibility regulations the rear door retains its standard glass.

The new ebony Alston headliner has a dramatic effect on the interior of the Defender, and complements the feel and style of the black pack option perfectly. More traditionally seen on the Range Rover, this headliner brings an element of elegance to this off-road icon.

To improve the flexibility of these extensive personalisation options for Defender, a new finish will be available on the vehicle’s optional side runner. Painted silver, in contrast to the black side runner available on existing Defender vehicles, it is the perfect partner for customers opting to take the silver pack.

Defender is now available with contrast leather premium seats, which feature Windsor leather inserts, and a choice of three colourways; Ebony/Pimento, Ebony/Tan or Ebony/Lunar. If specified, this theme is also continued through to the second and third row seats. To complete the look, the front centre stowage compartment features contrast leather highlights.

A new body colour, Yulong White, will be available across the Defender range from August 2015.

Dynamic Stability Control
From 2015 Model Year the 90 station wagon and 110 Station wagon will be fitted with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) as standard. This will be packaged with ABS and therefore means that these Defender models will have ABS with Electronic Traction Control (ETC) and DSC as standard. ABS will also be available for the first time on 130 wheel base Defender models.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has announced details of its new limited edition GLX-R Warrior model alongside additional safety and convenience features made standard across the 2015 model year Triton range.

The Warrior’s exterior styling is complemented by a Genuine Accessory alloy front nudge bar, flush fit soft tonneau cover and Warrior decal fitted to the front doors.  It will be available in Charcoal, Cool Silver, Ironbark and White exterior colours. A Genuine Accessory front protection bar is also available.*
