Australia’s best-selling large SUV, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, has continued its award-winning run with another pair of important accolades, scoring ‘motoring.com.au Recommends’ honours in two categories: SUV under $50k and Off-Road 4X4.

It’s the third consecutive year motoring.com.au has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee in its top picks in both the SUV and 4X4 categories.

Motoring.com.au and carsales.com Ltd Editor-in-Chief, Mike Sinclair, said: "motoring.com.au Recommends awards the best new cars on sale today.

"The cars we choose are the best in their respective segments and represent great buying choices for new car shoppers.

"Experience gained from new car launch drives, both local and abroad, seven-day real-world tests and longer-term reviews that replicate the ownership experience all go into our deliberation.

"The selection has quickly become a key tool for new car buyers.”

The awards come just three weeks after the Jeep Grand Cherokee was named Australia’s cheapest large SUV to own in a study conducted by Western Australia’s peak motoring body, The Royal Automotive Club (RAC). And it follows a string of other high-profile accolades, including being named Drive’s Best 4WD in 2013 - for the third consecutive year.

It’s terrific news for the thousands of Australians who’ve purchased Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, helping lift it to the title of best-selling large SUV over the past 12 months (June 2013 to July 2014) with more than 16,700 units sold.

Mitsubishi’s sophisticated Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is set to tackle a new frontier when it takes on one of the toughest off-road events in outback Australia next month.

With technical support from Mitsubishi Motors Australia (MMAL), Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Australia (TMR Australia) will enter a plug-in hybrid Outlander PHEV in the iconic Australasian Safari, which takes place in Western Australia from 19-27 September.

It will be the first plug-in hybrid four-wheel drive officially entered in an Australian motorsport event – including the Safari, which is considered one of the most demanding off-road endurance rallies in Australia.

Experienced local driver and co-driver team of Steve Glenney and Bernie Webb will put the TMR Australia plug-in hybrid Outlander PHEV through its paces during the nine-day outback event.

The Outlander PHEV will compete in class A1 for production vehicles, in a category specially created for hybrid or dual powered vehicles.

TMR Australia’s Australasian Safari entry marks the third international off-road rally outing for an Outlander PHEV since its launch in late 2012.  Previously, the Outlander PHEV’s all-terrain performance and durability have been tested in the Thailand, Cambodia Asia Cross Country Rally, which the Mitsubishi SUV successfully completed in 2013 and 2014.

TMR Australia Outlander PHEV Safari Team Principal Alan Heaphy said the Australasian Safari is a challenging event that demands stamina and endurance from competitors and vehicles alike.

“We’re very excited about building the first plug-in hybrid to compete in the Australasian Safari,” he said.

“The Outlander PHEV showcases the latest Mitsubishi hybrid and four-wheel drive technology, making it an ideal platform for an entry in the Australasian Safari.

“From our long-term experience working with Mitsubishi products, the quality of engineering and technology is a good match for motorsport, and we’re looking forward to proving the Outlander PHEV’s durability and technology in genuine off-road conditions.”

Competing in Australasian Safari production class A1, the Outlander PHEV will be built to meet FIA specification with only minor modifications made for durability and safety.

To help it withstand the punishing conditions, the Outlander PHEV will have extra underbody and frontal protection, reinforced suspension arms and strut towers along with competition brake pads, rally tyres and springs with adjustable dampers for added strength and durability.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV.  It uses Mitsubishi Motors’ advanced electric vehicle technology by combining a 2.0L MIVEC petrol engine with high output 60kW twin front and rear motors, high capacity 12kWh drive battery and regenerative braking system for maximum efficiency and performance.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will support the TMR Australia Outlander PHEV Safari entry by sending three plug-in hybrid specialist engineers to Western Australia for technical assistance during the gruelling seven day event, which will cover more than 2,500 competitive kilometres through sand, salt plains, dry river beds and rugged desert tracks.

The 2014 Australasian Safari concludes in Kalbarri – 600 kilometres north of Perth – on Saturday 27 September.

Suzuki Motor Corporation is pleased to announce the world premiere of the all-new Vitara, which will take place at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.

The Vitara is based on the concept model iV-4, which was exhibited at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Detailed information will be disclosed at the Suzuki press conference, scheduled for 2pm on Thursday, October 2.

The Limited Diesel completes the already-impressive Cherokee line-up, which is also offered in Sport guise, with its 2.4-litre petrol engine, and the Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk trim levels – all offered with Jeep’s award-winning 3.2-litre Pentastar V6.

Jeep’s 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine delivers 125kW and 350Nm and is equipped with Stop/Start technology that helps keep fuel consumption to an impressive 5.8-litres per hundred kilometres.

The new Jeep Cherokee Limited Diesel also features one of Jeep’s most advanced off-road systems, Active Drive II, which features a two-speed power transfer unit with torque management and low range unique to the diesel powertrain.

The Limited Diesel also features 18-inch aluminum wheels, leather upholstery with heated front seats, Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation, front and rear parking sensors with reversing camera and an Alpine nine-speaker surround sound system all as standard.

Standard safety features include seven airbags (front seats multistage air bags, side bags, window bags, driver side knee air bag), ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with ERM (rollover mitigation) and ABS (anti-lock brake system) with both on-road and off-road calibration.

To ensure maximum protection, additional safety feature options for the new Jeep Cherokee include new systems such as the innovative Forward Collision Warning-Plus, ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, Lane Departure Warning-Plus, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection.

Maximising safety and security with the development of the new Cherokee allowed the mid-size SUV to earn an ANCAP five-star rating. The new Cherokee also earned the ‘best in class’ designation from Euro NCAP in the Small Off-road 4X4 category for the year 2013.

This vehicle is also the first mid-size SUV to feature rear axle disconnect, resulting in reduced friction and energy loss when 4x4 capability isn’t needed and ensuring improved fuel efficiency.

Land Rover reveals new Discovery Sport

  • Land Rover reveals the world’s most versatile and capable premium compact SUV
  • Bold and progressive design defines all-new Discovery family
  • Design leadership and engineering integrity have created the ultimate use of interior space with class-leading versatility and optional 5+2 seating
  • Discovery Sport revealed digitally at Spaceport America with news of Galactic Discovery competition to send four winners to space with Virgin Galactic

Whitley, UK, September 3, 2014 – Land Rover has revealed the new Discovery Sport, the world’s most versatile and capable premium compact SUV. The first member of the new Discovery family, Discovery Sport, features 5+2 seating in a footprint no larger than existing 5-seat premium SUVs.

Discovery Sport’s progressive new design approach defines the new Discovery family with optimised volume, proportions and stance. Its design leadership combines with engineering integrity to result in a dynamic profile, the ultimate use of interior space and 5+2 seating configurability.

“Our challenge has been to combine premium design with exceptional versatility; the two attributes must work in harmony,” said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer. “I’m proud to say we’ve achieved that; Discovery Sport’s dynamic design will resonate on an emotional level with consumers, and this vehicle is more versatile than any other premium compact SUV on the market.”

Land Rover digitally revealed the new Discovery Sport at Spaceport America in New Mexico, USA, also launching the Land Rover Galactic Discovery competition. Four friends are set to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to space with Land Rover’s global partner, Virgin Galactic as part of an innovative digital competition at https://gotospace.landrover.com/au

This spirit of adventure is reflected in Discovery Sport’s interior, which has been designed with customers at its core. It features high-quality materials and a strong vertical centre console graphic to reflect the premium design of the exterior, while the core Discovery value of versatility is evident everywhere. Storage solutions are integrated into the cabin and up to four 12V power points and six USB charging sockets can be specified for all three rows of seating, allowing multiple electronic devices to be charged simultaneously.

A host of innovations have allowed Discovery Sport to introduce the versatility of 5+2 seating into the premium compact SUV class for the first time. An all-new multi-link rear axle not only provides engaging driving dynamics but it also provides ample and flexible cabin space behind the second row.

Coupled with supple long-travel suspension, the innovative rear axle also ensures the Discovery Sport is comfortable, refined and rewarding to drive on-road, while retaining the breadth of all-terrain capability for which Land Rover is world-renowned. In fact, with approach, departure and breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees respectively, Terrain Response® technology, and the ability to wade to 600mm, Discovery Sport offers class-leading capability in all conditions.

As with every new Land Rover, safety has been a key priority in the development of the new Discovery Sport, resulting in a first-in-class pedestrian airbag, autonomous emergency braking, and a state-of-the-art bodyshell featuring both ultra-high-strength steel and lightweight aluminium.

This represents a fraction of the advanced equipment available in Discovery Sport, which also includes Head-Up Display, an all-new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and tilt-and-slide row-two seating for maximum interior configurability.

At launch the Discovery Sport will be equipped with a range of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Both the all-alloy Si4 2.0-litre petrol engine and the 2.2-litre turbodiesel feature stop-start technology, high-pressure direct injection, low-friction internal components and smart regenerative charging for outstanding performance and economy.

Both 9-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions are available in the two versions of 2.2-litre diesel models, in TD4 110kW and SD4 140kW outputs both producing 420Nm of torque. The Si4 2.0-litre petrol engine is fitted with the 9-speed automatic transmission as standard and all powertrains are four-wheel-drive.

“Not only does Discovery Sport mark the introduction of the first new member of our expanding Discovery family, it also brings the versatility of 5+2 seating to the compact premium SUV market,” said Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover Group Marketing Director. “Discovery Sport’s versatility is a key differentiator. It is quite simply the most accomplished vehicle in its segment.”

Discovery Sport will be produced at Land Rover’s award-winning manufacturing facility at Halewood, Liverpool. It goes on sale in May 2015 alongside the existing seven-seat Land Rover Discovery in over 170 markets worldwide.

Mitsubishi Motors has released a sneak preview of its Outlander PHEV Concept-S, which will be revealed at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.

The Outlander PHEV Concept-S show car is a proposed special package of the Outlander PHEV production model complete with individual interior and exterior design.

Based on a design theme of sporty and sophisticated, the Outlander PHEV Concept-S captures the unique combination of spirited 4x4 performance from its twin-motor PHEV system, quiet operation and superior on-road performance.

Top NSW and Australian Rally Championship rally star Jack Monkhouse has enormous praise for the Australian made Lightforce HID lights.

Using 240mm Blitz 50W HID lights, he convincingly won every night stage and the overall event at the Ansag Orange Rally.

His classic Datsun 180B beat a wide range of rally cars including turbo 4WDs, highly modified 2WDs and other classic category competitors.

Jack has been rallying for about 15 years and was astounded by both the distance and spread of the Blitz HID units.   His ‘Team Datsun Australia’ Facebook page is a new way of publicising the efforts of him and fellow team mate Ryan Smart.

Having used many other brands over the years meant Jack had the background to judge the Lightforce HIDs against other driving and spot lights.   He praised the lights output, lense pattern and the strong lightweight construction.

He was stunningly fast on the night stages and was impressed by the distance of approx. 1.5km that the Blitz lights offered on straighter stages of the event.

Jack thanks Lightforce World for their loan of the lights for this season’s events.
